This bed fits a small to medium-sized dog. (See "Sizing" below.) For a larger dog bed, see our suggestions at bottom:
Materials and tools needed:
- Two old couch cushions
-
Straight pins or sturdy safety pins
-
Needle and heavy duty sewing thread to match cushions
-
Sewing machine (optional)
-
Stuffing material such as foam pieces, old socks, old clothes, recycled batting
Sizing:
- Have your dog lie down in the middle of one of the cushions
-
For the best fit, there should be 4 to 6 inches [100 to 150 mm] clearance on three sides
Instructions:
- Pick the cushion with the best cover for your base cushion
-
Take the fabric off the other cushion
-
Cut 12- to 14-inch [300 to 350 mm] wide strips out of the better looking pieces of fabric
-
Sew ends together until you have one strip long enough to go around 3 sides (2 widths and 1 length) of the cushion
-
Putting wrong sides together, fold the strip in half
-
Sew a seam along the unattached edges until you have formed a tube
-
Stuff the tube evenly with your stuffing material(s)
-
Sew the ends closed - do neatly and try to have ends match each other
-
Starting at the front of your base cushion, pin the tube all along the 3 sides
-
Be sure to hide the seam you created
-
When you're satisfied with how it looks¸ sew the tube tightly onto the cushion
Now it's time for your dog to give it a test!
P.S. You may want to add your dog's favorite blanket as a washable cover.
For a larger dog, consider using a combination of 2 or more couch cushions for the base, sew the sections tightly together, then find a piece of discarded material (old drapes or blankets) to cover the whole base and to make your tube
