Couches had legs like chairs and were without the arms. You can easily imagine ladies sitting or laying on them. The root of the word couch is Arabic. Their version of this furniture was different, with shorter legs, more like a bench. But nowadays, the furniture has changed and you cannot tell such difference. Another difference is that often now, it's a three-piece suite.

I guess it wouldn't be right to correct somebody who prefers to say either "couch" or "sofa".
